Shirley Smart: cello
From the forthcoming album, Entanglement. The album is a set of nine freely improvised duos performed by James Arben on tenor sax, flute, and bass clarinet and Shirley Smart on cello. James and Shirley met working together in the band of Ethiopian vibraphone legend Mulatu Astatke, and the duo project grew out of their discussions in various airports and green rooms about improvising, music and green room wine. They have a shared love of musical dialogue in improvisation, as well as incorporating influences from all aspects of their musical lives.
